All of Us Movement
In Solidarity - Longsleeve
By Monyee Chau
Throughout the past few months, there has been a resurgence of xenophobic sentiment towards the Asian and Asian American communities across the States due to COVID19. And in the past few weeks, the world has finally rallied more expansively for Black liberation. Our struggles are intertwined - both at the hand of white supremacy - but have been consistently used as a wedge between our communities since the onset of Asian immigration to the United States.
This piece is meant to call on Asians to dismantle the legacy of anti-Blackness in our society, our families, and ourselves: we cannot move through this experience by being silent. Rather, we must be anti-Racist in all of our work in our communities moving forward. This imagery is a nod to Asian leftists fighting alongside the Black Panther Party during the Civil Rights Movement. Emphasizing the balance in a yin yang, the tiger is interlocked with a black panther. This is to remind us of the history of Asians who stood in solidarity with the Black community. This crisis cannot be healed unless we address anti-Blackness in our communities, and actively participate in the work of uplifting and amplifying Black voices.
As the artist, I want to appreciate all of the conversations and education this piece has started. I hope that this work continues to encourage our communities to be on the streets, provoke these difficult questions and conversations, and work in solidarity to fight for true liberation for all communities.
